So, I'm learning that it isn't really Halloween unless you make a last minute run to the store for a new costume. For our family, it was a necessity for the boys as I had bought much to large costumes earlier and for the girls, well, if the boys were getting new costumes than they needed them too :) Of course, that meant that I had a family full of super heroes. One last thought -- E and L both were content and ready to head home after about 5 houses. They couldn't believe the amount of loot they got for saying "trick or treat!" Yet, the rest of the rascals wanted more and more treats. Think the lesson Mommy learned is to find more ways to help little people be thankful for what they do have versus always wanting "MORE". Things kiddos teach big peoples :)

First Night of "Summer"

After Elena's birthday party and sleepover the crew has been chomping at the bit to have another sleepover party. Specifically, to have K and H sleepover. So, I promised them that the last day of school they could have their first sleepover of the summer.

The kids had fun with dinner at Chick Fil A and playing outside. Once we went in for the night I got them set up in their "special" sleeping spot on the air mattress and pull out couch. We watched "Surf's Up" and laughed at penguins hanging ten. I thought for sure that the six of them would sack out during the movie, but no go. All were awake until 9:30-10, with K and El my last hold outs.

However, by 10:15 this was the situation in the house:

Lydia had to sleep in her own bed, but the rest slept soundly in the living room for the night.

I think everyone had a good time. I know that my kids are excited for a repeat. H, however, thinks our house is "too crowded" and prefers to sleep in his own bed :) Pretty cute all around the compound!

Mommy's first try at Friday Hair Day

The first, and last, time that I had the girls' hair done it cost me an arm and a leg. Literally. So wanting to save some money, but also wanting to save some time (and my sanity) on getting the girls ready every day, I decided to try my hand at doing their hair myself.

After researching the internet on different options (specifically www.happygirlhair.com and the adoption hair and skincare group on Yahoo!) we got down to it. I gathered the elastics, combs, and creams, and sat the the kids down in front of a movie. It wasn't all fun. There were tears, and not just mine. But I'm pretty happy with the finished product for our first go:

Ghana v USA football

Yesterday was the first game in the knockout stage of the World Cup and the USA faced off against Ghana Black Stars. Our house was divided with my Ghanaian angels rooting for "their" team, Elena fiercely loyal to the red, white, and blue, Garrett indifferent, and I was torn yet wearing Essien's Black Stars jersey.

Football Follies

While in Ghana I thought signed Eddie up for a rec soccer team would help him make friends and find common ground with others his age. Unfortunately, it didn't turn out that way. The team coach had the team doing drills from day one, and Eddie didn't understand what he needed to do. Practices became a challenge to get him to participate and the first game he sat on the field refusing to engage. Asked if he wanted to wait until the fall to play the answer was a resounding "Yes!" So here are some photos of my eldest's brief foray into playing football. It was cute while it lasted :)

Not even a week after Eddie and Lydia arrived in the States we attempted our first family outing to the zoo. Eddie and Lydia had seen many animals in the wild, but never so many and so close without being in danger. The kids' joy was so wonderful to share! A great family memory to treasure!

Snow Fun

President's Day weekend we headed up to the San Bernadino Mountains after our day at the beach. Gotta love living in the land where we can beach it one day and romp in the snow the next. Mountain Misadventures

After a week of staying close to the house because of Garrett's pneumonia, we all decided it was time to get out and about. Our choices were the beach, the mountains, or the desert. Papa wanted to see something "different" so we headed east since we go to the beach regularly. The kids and YaYa weren't excited about a three hour trip to the desert, so we drove up the "roller coaster" of Mount Palomar and enjoyed some views. Unfortunately, there was some haze so we couldn't see all the way to the ocean, but PaPa and YaYa were still impressed with the scenery. The kids had fun tromping around the rocks and woods. All in all, it was a grand adventure for the day!

That's right folks. Lydia's passport was finally issued today. It's been over 10 weeks since the first passport was applied for, and only 2 days since the second application was submitted. We have the passport in our hot little hands, and we are seriously thinking of bronzing both of these things for posterity. Now on to the embassy for our visa appointment on THURSDAY. So thinking it might be actually possible to be with my complete family this weekend!!!

The Fihankra Foundation

Please visit the website for the non-profit I am helping to launch. The goal of the organization is to help provide for the physiological and educational needs of orphaned and neglected in Ghana. Many of these children reside in foster homes with 20 or more other children, homes that individuals have opened to these children without state or outside assistance.

We have launched our first fundraiser this weekend and are hoping to raise at least $250 for juice, rice, and medications for the children. Beach Makes It Better

Yesterday we received the news that Lydia's passport application file was lost during the transition to the new director. While a new file has been started (they still have her picture and her birth certificate, but the rest of the documents have been lost), I'm not sure if the new file has to go all the way through the approval process again or not. The approval for the first application took over a month, so I am really hoping the extra money our coordinator spent to expedite this application means that it will be processed quickly this time.

Our coordinator gave me the news as he dropped the kids and I off at Labadi Pleasure Beach. As I was trying very hard to observe Ghanaian custom and not show I was upset (Ghanaians only frown with their butts, not their faces let alone cry), the sand, surf, and sun washed over me. Soon I was hugged by children's giggles and how could my heart remain sad???

In total we spent 3 hours at the beach. The kids each got a ride on a horse in the surf (5 cedis each, Eddie with the horse owner, and then Lydia with me). That really helped improve my mood! We took several walks along the shore collecting sea shells and found several local sand dollars. Edward had a blast splashing in the waves, but Lydia was not as convinced and spent most of her time in the water firmly attached to my legs. I taught the kids how to build sand castles and decorate them with our seashells -- and Eddie quickly discovered the joy in wrecking sand castles. :) I didn't bring my camera to the beach, but I did get video and will post those later when I have the bandwidth to do it.

While at the beach I got to practice my bargaining skills. The locals see a white person and immediately think "Obruni = rich". Like in other poor countries prices are hiked and bargaining is expected. If you are willing to pay the high price then they think you really are rich and deserve to be parted from your money. The first practice I got on bargaining was with the horse man. He told me 5 cedis for Eddie to ride, and I asked if Lydia could also ride with him for the same price. The horseman agreed, but Lydia was terrified of getting on the horse. When Eddie finished his ride, the man offered Lydia and I a ride which I took him up on thinking it was part of the 5 cedis I had already paid. Let's just say I was more than shocked when I got off the horse with my daughter and the man asked for 10 more cedis! He had seen the 20 cedis I brought to buy our lunch and thought it should line his wallet. He explained that adults are 10 cedis to ride and children are 5 cedis, but he let Lydia ride for free because she was so scared. Um, yeah. When he realized I wasn't going to give him anything else he finally accepted the 5 cedis I offered and I realized that price must always be arranged before accepting service. After that lesson I negotiated for 6 bananas instead of 4 for 1 cedi and then for 30 cedis for a beautiful oil painting of coastal Accra by a local artist that was hawking his wares along the beach.

While Labadi Pleasure Beach was beautiful with its blue surf and fishermen mending their nets nearby, it definitely is a tourist destination. The beach is lined with cabanas for rent and local restaurants. People troll the beach trying to sell art, jewelry, shirts, and food. Horses are available for rent to ride along the surf. Yet, there are few (I found only 1) trash cans and garbage lines the beach. We sidestepped broken bottles, dirty diapers, water satchels, and small poo bags (yes, people poo in bags and then dispose of the bags). At one point Eddie and Lydia went racing off after a piece of garbage in the water that I quickly realized was a floating condom. I so wanted to grab a giant trash bag and start cleanup duty, but was afraid of offending the locals, plus I couldn't find any place to get rid of the refuse. Yet again I was struck by the dichotomy that is Ghana.

Since Uncle P drove us away from the beach Edward has asked to go back. Since we are here until further notice, I figure another trip to the beach is in order for next week to keep us from thinking about how far we still are from home.

Trying to prepare Eddie for kindergarten. He loves doing school work and is so proud of his workbooks. I just had to take a picture of him practicing his letters. We also do some simple math and read every day. This kid is bursting at the seams to start school (and his little sister can't wait to follow in his shoes)!

Honey loved his Lydia and Eddie, but he especially loved Lydia's clothes. Could this kid be any cuter wearing a tutu??? Of course, this is total blackmail material for when his high school graduation.

Honey copied everything that Eddie did the last two weeks he was here. Of course, there was plenty that Eddie copied from Honey -- like wearing Lydia's tutu. Needless to say, Hannah and I were close to tears from laughter this night.

Learning about Ghana's Independence

Needing a break from the hotel, the kids and I packed up and headed off to the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park. Kwame Nkrumah declared independence from Britain on March 6, 1957, the first African nation to declare independence from colonial rule, and the park is on the Old Polo grounds where he made his proclamation. The park also is the final resting place for his body, and the Mausoleum is the main structure on in the park, along with a museum of the man's history. It was a nice way to spend an hour outside of the hotel and the kids and I had fun together.

Day Trip to Aburi Botanical Gardens

Uncle P took us to Aburi Botanical Gardens for a day trip. Something to do to get out of the city and break the monotony of our routine. Definitely was more fun for the grown-ups than the kids, but at least there was grass for them to run around on for a bit.

The drive -- and you thought traffic in LA, NY, DC, Boston was bad. Seriously don't think "rules of the road" here. For example, cars have the right of way over pedestrians, and I mean literally OVER pedestrians. Then there is the always fun driving in between lanes to scoot up 3 car lengths and the constant blaring of horns. Will post video when I get home so you can get a better understanding of the insanity that is driving around here.

Street peddlers -- these people literally walk around all day with large loads of water, plantain chips, bofrut, bananas, etc. and approach cars idling in traffic to make sales for a few peswas (less than 5 pennies for a lot of it). Their balance, physical strength, and determination to come back out day after day never fails to impress me.

Once outside of Accra I got to see actual hills. The land is so beautiful here.

A Day at the Museum

The day we were initially scheduled to leave Accra we decided that we needed a little adventure. So we loaded up into a taxi and headed up the road to the National Museum. It was interesting to learn some more about this beautiful country, but all four kids for the most part were less than impressed so less learning took place than I would have liked. Overall, the museum was good for a two hour diversion from the hotel.

The first part of the museum that we explored was the statue garden inside the front gate:

A statue of Kwame Nkrumah, the first president/prime minister of Ghana and the man who declared Ghanaian independence from Britain in 1957. This statue is a replica of the one that stood in front of the seat of government and was destroyed during the coup in 1966.

The children were fascinated by this statue of fishermen and their canoe.

The dichotomy of Ghana -- the beauty of the land and the local arts, and then the lack of stewardship of that beauty. The splendor of the statue garden, and yet there was trash all over the ground. I could not take in one without being fully aware of the other.

Inside the National Museum:

Amazing hand-carved stools. Each symbol represents a parable or truth of the Akan culture. The stools are dragged outside at night for story telling, how the history and culture is passed from one generation to the next still today.

New Foster Home

Saturday Hannah, the kids and I got a special treat -- our coordinator, Uncle P, took us to the foster home where our kids had been staying until 6 weeks ago when we arrived. However, the treat wasn't just getting to see and love on all those sweet faces (I so want to post some of them!!!), but we got to see the new home that the children moved into courtesy of Life's Vision International. All I can say is WOW!

This is where the children were living when we last saw them five weeks ago, one week after we arrived in Ghana:

The house was very, very small and yet the foster mother and father were raising 27 children! Outside there was no place for the kids to play -- piles of refuse took up most of the yard, and there was also sewage running through. There was no loo/washroom. The family and children all used either an outhouse or chamber pots. In fact, the first image of the foster home that I remember is seeing a small one sitting on the chamber pot next to the outhouse as we pulled up to the house. During our second visit I was led inside by several of the children and got to see where they all slept -- a room the size of my living room with peeling laminate floor. All the children had mats that they spread on the floor at night to sleep, and during the day they just sat on the floor which was as clean as they could keep it, but not great by American standards. There was constant noise and smell and just sensory overload. On top of the housing situation, the children didn't have enough food to eat -- typically one meal a day -- or water. They were dirty, scabbed, and heart-breaking to see. Most of the children had a haunted look of sadness about them, and I can't tell you the number of "Please, madam, may I have water?" whenever I took a drink from the water bottle I brought with us.

Both visits to the foster home were such a visceral experience that Chris, Hannah, Stephen and I all vowed to commit ourselves to either working with an existing nonprofit organization in the country to help the kids, or to start one ourselves. Uncle P told us there was a new house available for the foster family and children, but it still needed to have the electric wires brought to the house (a $900 fee) and then at least $150 a month to pay for the electricity bill. He was hopeful that they would be able to find the money for the electricity, and the four of us decided we needed to find a way to help.

So imagine my and Hannah's excitement when, after a month plus of discussing different ways we could help, projects to implement that would provide much needed funding but also allow them to follow Ghanaian traditions not western ideals, Uncle P told us he was taking us to the new home!!! They still do not have electricity or much furniture, but they have moved in and the difference in the children was palpable! Hannah and I also decided that we needed to deliver some much needed items to the home that they could use immediately instead of leaving another cash donation. Yet, the best part of the day was seeing how truly thankful and proud the children were to have their new home, to receive the gifts we brought, and to play with our children again.

Our gifts -- rice (50 Ghana cedis for this bag!), juice boxes to give much needed vitamin C to the children, biscuits as snacks, toilet paper, soap, and the remaining cedi was used to buy everyone new slippers (flip-flops)

Obama Biscuits -- this country is absolutely mad about Obama. These biscuits (crackers) are the children's favorite treat/snack. Now I understand why my daughter would yell "Obama! Obama!" every time I offered her a biscuit :)

Think the children were excited about the rice? This one wouldn't stay away from it, and I have another picture of 3 boys sitting on the bag with the biggest grins on their faces. While I am thankful they were so happy about a big bag of rice, it still hurts my heart to know that this is the main staple of their diet and yet this bag will only last them a few days.

Everything we brought to the foster home was purchased at a road side market/store. In many ways the meat store reminded me of the meat market we had in my town when I was growing up. This box of frozen chicken was used to make soup for the children's lunch on Saturday, used again for lunch today, and the rest was frozen so they can eat it next weekend. Having any kind of protein is a real treat for these children and yet is something else we take for granted in the States where protein is often the largest portion on our plates.

The front of the new home! The courtyard is completely walled-in with a large gate that the family has to open to allow others to enter. This gives the children someplace safe to play football (soccer) and just be kids.

The porch -- covered and cool. The last home also had a porch for visiting, but it was about half the size and didn't provide the respite from the heat and the sun that this one does. Most of our time there a group of boys played on the porch trying to out-shoot each other with rubber bands.

A very kind woman named Becky stopped by while we were visiting. Her son stays at the home, but I'm not sure if that is for while she is working or if he is being referred into the system. Becky brought lots of great vegetables and let me take some pictures. In this basket were yams (those giant tubers on the right side), cassava, ginger, onions, cabbage, poms (? the small red items on the left side), and another vegetable I didn't recognize and couldn't understand the pronunciation of. Regardless of how you say it, ALL the veggies looked delicious, especially considering I have learned in the past month how expensive they are to grow, and thus are not served with most meals.

Most laundry in Ghana seems to be washed by hand. First, there is the lack of electricity and the unreliability of power if you have access. Second, is the cost of a washing machine. So I have learned to wash my clothes in the tub and dread doing the chore every day. Yet, this is the pile of ONE DAY's LAUNDRY for the foster home. It's all a matter of perspective.

After lunch it was time for us to be on our way. Hannah was feeling itchy and concerned about the spices used in the soup, and our three kids were ready for a rest. It felt so good to get out of the hotel and spend some time thinking about someone other than myself and the lack of my children's passports. Most of the children at this home still have not been matched with a family. So many of their faces haunt my dreams and daydreams. I have a feeling if I could post their pictures you wouldn't be able to stop thinking about them either. Thinking about the medical care so many of them need, the vitamins, the soap, the clothes, the school supplies (there were 3 coloring books for all the children to share), the food, etc., etc., etc. that is needed to help them thrive despite the curves life has thrown at them in their early lives.

I'm just very thankful that Momma's was the last face I saw as we pulled out of the gate and will pray that those sweet children will be watched over while the adults figure out how to help them best!

Christmas in Ghana was a wonderful, fun day. We started the day at 7 w/ breakfast (chocolate croissants, omelets, and coffee/Milo/juice) and then went to church.

Upon advice from the fabulous Coconut Grove staff we decided to visit Ridge Church, a combo Anglican/Presbyterian/Methodist church founded in 1936. We didn't know what time church started at, so we arrived at the end of one service and had to wait until 10 for the second service. This was the first church service for all 3 kiddos and they didn't last the first hour of service -- and we hadn't even made it to the scripture readings or sermon yet! As much as I wanted to stay and recharge, it really wasn't good for the kids -- Eddie kept asking if he could go to sleep and Lydia just wanted to lay down on me. So we returned to the hotel for naps and relaxation.

After Eddie slept for 2+ hours, Lydia for 1 hour, and HC for 30 min, we gathered up and headed to the Christmas buffet at the hotel restaurant. Auntie Suzy called to make sure that we were coming for dinner, and it was very nice to see all the staff in their holiday clothes enjoying a meal together. The buffet had goat light soup, salad, beef jollof, yam balls, fried sole, Chinese spaghetti, braised leg of lamb in brown sauce, and roasted turkey. Yummy! Hannah and I were so excited that we got to have turkey, even if the kids were less than impressed

After dinner we headed back to the hotel room to exchange presents. Having not planned to still be in Africa for Christmas, we had not packed presents. I had been hoarding some small items each time we went to the market, and Hannah and I each bought some small items for the kids at Makola marketplace on Christmas eve. The expressions on Eddie and Lydia's faces were just too much. These kids were so excited to have gifts; they didn't even care/realize that they had helped Mommy pick out most of the items during previous market trips.

We played in the room with the new toys, E and L got dressed in their new clothes, and we enjoyed ourselves for a while while waiting for our families to wake up Christmas morning (sometimes this 8 hr difference can be a killer). When it seemed like we weren't going to be doing anything useful while we waited, and before the kiddos rioted from being stuck in the hotel room, we headed out to the courtyard to play football (American soccer). E and L had fun showing off their new stuff and two other children staying at the hotel came out to play with us. E was jealous of my playing with our Nigerian friends, but overall a great time was had by all. HC even yawned more than played before long, and then crawled into bed once he was back in the room.

While it was hard to be away from the rest of our families, I believe Hannah and I made the best of our day together. Here's the photographic evidence:

After the airport, the first memory/sensory experience I have of Africa/Ghana is this:

We are driving (crazier driving than in Guatemala!) and I hear what sounds like a flock of birds chirping wildly. Chris and I look out the window and see TONS of birds in the sky. In one part of the street, the sky is almost dark with them and we can hear them over the very loud sounds on the street (topic for another post -- crazy noise levels in Accra). This was the site:

Then our dear coordinator in-country explains that what we are witnessing is not birds, but are in fact BATS!!! Bats, in the daytime! Craziness of all craziness. Once I realize they are bats, I can tell the sound I am hearing is not chirping, but the sound of the bats squeaking/screeching. Then our coordinator says that bat is a delicacy in Accra, "Very delicious." Then I looked closer at the trees in the area and realized that what I thought was dead foliage was in fact, bats hanging. Wow! What a strange sight!!!

Upon doing some research, it seems that these are a unique case of fruit bats. Supposedly they traveled to Ghana with a tribal elder to help him, but then he died and the bats stayed. The military tried to get rid of them by shooting, but bats reproduce at an accelerated rate when facing danger, so all that did was make the colony larger. Now Area 37 of Accra has new permanent residents that make lots of noise and leave guano all over the place. It's still one of my favorite places to drive by in the city :)

Ice cream adventures

This week has been a week of sitting around and waiting. Our coordinator brought us back from the beach in the hopes that the kids passports would be issued and we could finish some of the paperwork for travel. Unfortunately, no luck. So we stayed at the Regency in Accra (which is a very nice hotel) where we started to feel trapped in a repeating cycle of events. I'll write more about those later (once the kiddos have food in their bellies and are more patient for Mommy on the computer).

Last night we couldn't take it any more and adventured out to "Frankie's" a restaurant in the Osu section of Accra. After a dinner of delicious pizza -- wish I had taken some photos of Edward and Lydia's faces when they realized that was dinner -- we had real ice cream (the hotel stuff has a funny taste, like Parmalat). Saturday was our last day at the beach, plus we finally went out into the town to explore a little.

Another adoptive family showed up at the resort to spend a weekend with us, and the kids were so excited to be reunited with their foster brother. So excited in fact, that E and L decided to stay back at the resort and play in the pool and at the beach rather than head out with their mother to the slave castles.

Here are some photos from my morning/afternoon reprieve and of the local sights:

Fishing village -- wow. Road side "stores" with goods ranging from coconuts to tires and everything in between. Thatched roofs. Can't even comprehend.

Cape Coast Castle. Some form of trading fort/slave trade center since the 1400s. Also the first place the missionaries introduced formal education in Ghana. The school was directly atop the male slave dungeon. The best and worst of human endeavors. Listening to the tour guide literally made me sick to my stomach. If only all Americans could experience this to learn -- my former students take note: You would do well to visit here!

The center of a fishing community, right outside the castle walls. Amazing to watch them and see how beautiful the scenery is, yet cannot contrast that with the violence we as humans did to each other in this location.

The Presidential Palace -- had to sneak a picture as we are not supposed to take pictures of the presidential residence, but I couldn't resist. What is even more amazing about this building is the fact that so much money was poured into its development and construction while the roads need repair and the country needs a constant source of electricity and clean water.

There are hills and mountains in this country, even near the coast. Most of them didn't translate to film, but seeing them spring up as we drove was amazing.

A carpenter in Teshie (just outside of Accra) constructed a fancy coffin for his uncle. Now coffin sculptures are a booming industry, in the shape of fish to Mercedes Benz to anything the heart can imagine.

Not entirely sure how it got started (I think I was trying to convince C, our friend's 3 yo to brush his teeth), but the kids all love to have a tooth brushing party. Eddie and Lydia would brush their teeth 5x a day if I let them -- I have never met any children as excited as these two to brush their teeth. So we "brusha, brusha, bruuussshhhh" all day long and enjoy every minute of our clean pearly whites. :)

Reality Check

I don't want everyone to think that the attachment process between the kids and I, nor the trip, has been all sweetness and love. There have been a lot of hard times thus far, and I anticipate there will be plenty more challenges in the days ahead. However, I think that it is important as a mother of children who were adopted to be honest about the challenges that our family has faced, are still facing, and might face in the future. Silence will not help other families who are considering this path, or who are walking it and feeling alone in their struggles.

I think I have come to the understanding with these two kids that we are currently in a process of two steps forward, one step back. For several days earlier this week I was feeling like it was one step forward, two steps back, so there is progress. The face above is what I see most of the time with Lydia. She shuts down completely for ... I'm still trying to figure that out. I do know that if I don't feed her regularly (every two to three hours) that I will have a very angry, sullen girl on my hands. She also does not like it if I need to comfort her brother, want to play with her brother, or pay attention to anyone else (talk to Hannah, order food from the wait staff, etc.). Any by angry, I mean angry like I haven't seen. First, she shuts down, like above. Then if I haven't caught on to the situation she starts to throw things; whatever is close to hand will suffice: shoes, cups, toys, food. If that still does not elicit the response that she wants (usually my picking her up), than she starts to destroy whatever is left near her by tearing it, shredding it, breaking into the smallest pieces. I think the hardest part of these episodes for me isn't the crying or tempers, but the fact that I can't communicate with her while she feels this way. I can't even speak to her in her language other than to say "Ka fu" (don't cry), or mifenebo (what's wrong?) or misonobo (I love you). Somehow when she, or Eddie, is so distraught those three phrases do not seem adequate.

Using the bathroom is another struggle we have been facing. Both Edward and Lydia did not use the loo prior to living in the foster home, which I believe was in October. So, while they can control their bladders for most times, going to the actual loo/bathroom can be a battle. In fact, when Lydia is particularly agree she will wee (pee) where ever. She has wee'd on the sidewalk in front of our hotel room, on the floor of our room, on the bed, in a chair at the restaurant, on the floor of the restaurant, and on the patio of our hotel room. None of these are accidents. For example, when she wee'd on the bed she shouted "Momma" (big accomplishment finally being called Momma by my girl!!!) and then proceeded to do her business and giggle. Accidents while she sleeps we were warned of, but the purposeful peeing everywhere just kills me. She is old enough to remove the diapers when I try to put her in them, but I am at a loss of what else to do. That said, she did wear a diaper yesterday morning and we have not had a wee incident since. Hopefully that is one of our steps forward, but I will continue to be vigilant of the signs that the struggle might need to be attended to again.

Edward is not without his own struggles with Momma. He misses Chris and doesn't understand why Chris had to go to America without him. He will cry and wail now, with sound whereas when he first came to us the tears would rain down without a sound, and I have no idea why. He does get jealous of the attention his sister gets from me, which requires a delicate balancing act. He wants me to carry him like I carry his sister, quite an arm full! Sharing food is an issue, but it isn't always THE issue that leads to his meltdowns. I guess that I have not been able to decipher his cues like I have his sister's to an extent.

Then there are the conditions that the children live in here in Ghana. The foster family is so wonderful. They have taken into their home 27 children, but they don't have the space for all these children. I was led into the house during one of our visits by several of the children and I was amazed by the size that isn't there. People in my neighborhood are worried that the new houses base has built us (2200-2300 sqft) won't be adequate and this family and these children live in a 15x20 room with peeling laminate flooring. There are two small refrigerators to hold their food and a television in the corner of the room. There were two small back rooms in the house that I didn't see, and the laundry/cooking area. No running water that I could see -- outhouses and chamber pots served as the loo. The dirt lot pictured above is where the kids play around piles of garbage and the outhouses. I think what got to me the most wasn't the living conditions but the small voices begging "Please, madam. Please. May I have some water?" as the kids got not enough clean water to drink everyday and were in awe of our canteens filled with water to drink as we felt needed/wanted.

So while the kids and I are having a lot of fun getting to know each other, we are still getting to know each other. There are trials and tribulations as we feel each other out and learn what makes each other tick. I think the picture above of HC shows how all seven of us (the Merrills and Sneddens) feel from time to time. Some more often than others. But we are learning and growing.

Please pray that the children's Ghanaian passports are issued on Monday so we can schedule our visa appointment the following week. While we are still on schedule to leave on the 20th it was hard to hear today that the possibility of leaving a week early no longer exists and we will all be here for the full month.

We have moved from Accra to Cape Coast/Elmina. Our hotel room is literally steps from the beach (Gulf of Guinea), pool, playground, and restaurant. Today there is a horse tied up outside our door. This is the perfect place to wait out the issuing of the kids passports, the last step before we can apply for a visa home.

While the internet is still working well, here are a few more photos from our week in Ghana thus far.

Sunday:

Lydia eating some candy we brought as a treat to the foster home. Notice, she also is clutching two rocket balloons and a plastic slinky. These kids don't understand what it means to have something that is "theirs" and theirs alone. At first she just didn't trust anything about us, let alone that we would provide for her.

Edward's face is priceless -- I have just given him is first pair of closed-toe shoes and socks. Size 9 on a 5 year old boy. Too small, but the kid doesn't care -- he is going to wear them, and wear them with PRIDE. I just want to eat him up!

Can you imagine what America could be like if more of our children were this excited, truly excited over a pair of shoes???

Monday:

While Chris went to the USCIS appointment without me (more on that later), I stayed at the hotel with the kids and played in the courtyard. Edward grabbed my sunglasses and thought he was a funny man. Personally, I think he looks pretty handsome. What do you think?

This play time was after lunch and a rest, and Lydia opened up to me for the first time, laughing and yelling at the TV (football was on -- think she's gonna be like her Momma!). Once we got outside she thought the courtyard wall was a good place to check out the flowers and watch her brother and I kick around the ball.

Tuesday:

This is Lydia when she is upset about something. Chris says she starts to "turtle". She really does start to withdraw into herself when upset. What upsets her can be that food is not provided fast enough to fill her hungry stomach, waiting for water (or not knowing how to ask for it), Edward playing with her toy, Mommy playing with Edward, Daddy trying to play with her (though that is getting better and better), to not wanting to do what it is we are doing. Thankfully I am learning some of the language, and she is starting to learn ours, plus I am learning her cues, so the withdrawal periods are getting less and less. However, the crying is getting more and more, as both she and Edward are learning that if they cry someone will care for their needs. When we first picked them up on Sunday there were silent teardrops the size of Niagra Falls running down their faces. Now we have sobs. I'll take the sobs for now.

He is starting to teach Chris and I some of his language, but mostly laughs when we repeat him -- he even told one of the staff this morning (Friday) that Chris "doesn't know how to speak" when asked why he was laughing. Sounds like he'll get along with our nephew, Andrew, who told Chris years ago "You speak funny Russian" :)

Thursday:

More pictures from the pool. The other family with us here at the hotel is from the LA area and I am so glad to have them on this voyage with us. Their 3 year old son C is one of the coolest kids around. Tonight we realized that C has taught Edward and Lydia the Umpa Lumpa song from Willy Wonka as they sat at the dinner table repeating the refrain over and over and over again :) Plus, Lydia loves the S family's son HC who was in the same foster family. Having friends nearby to share these memories and forever family celebrations is priceless -- as my Guatemalan blog and FB friends can attest!

I-600 Approval and PICS!

First, I have to say that the internet is working much better today than yesterday when we got a new converter for our power plug (Chris blew our first converter the first night and I ran on battery juice until I was out on Tuesday just after I posted). One of the first things we found when we checked email today is that our I-600 immigration paperwork was approved! This means that the US gov't has cleared Edward and Lydia as orphans that are eligible for visas to enter the United States. Now we wait for their Ghanaian passports (they are Ghanaian citizens until they have lived in the US for 6 months since we didn't meet them prior to the adoption decree by the Ghanaian government) and then apply for their visa to enter the US. If all continues to go as it has, Percy, our coordinator, thinks we might be able to pick up our visas in TWO WEEKS (one less than originally thought and planned!!!!). So, we are asking all our friends and extended family for continued prayers that paperwork progresses smoothly and in perfect time.

Today has been another great day. We visited the market in town that specializes in African goods made by Africans. So many amazing handy crafts -- it was sensory overload for Mommy. We walked away with a couple of drums (big and small), a couple of flutes, some kish-kash, a mask, some beads, and new waist beads for L when she is bigger.

The sites here are searing. I can't get out of my mind the state of some of the houses here, and then to compare that to the demeanor of the people who are so thankful for all the good they have in their lives. We as consumers in America could learn a lot. I have a feeling after a month here I will be a changed woman.

L is having a hard time. She is growing more attached to me, but she does not want anything at all to do with Chris. This has been very hard for him, for his little girl to press against the wall to get away from him is not something he is used to with any child, let alone his. Yet, when L and I are alone together for any space of time, she starts to smile and giggle and is quite comfortable snuggling into me. Please pray that we find a good balance for helping her to adjust to us while she still misses her first family (that she has finally admitted to me).

E on the other hand is really coming alive in front of us. He is a smile from ear to ear. It makes me smile just remembering all of his -- kind of like our other little boy who has an infectious laugh and smile. As I type right now, E is drumming a wonderful beat on the drum. Amazing. Chris says that he is talking and using English words with him when they are alone. Such a different experience the boy with the Daddy and the girl with the Mommy.

We have also been blessed to have developed strong bonds with another family who is here to adopt a little precious boy, H. Hannah and Steven are like long lost family and I am amazed (have I used that word enough in this post?) at all we share outside of adoption as well. We are very fortunate to have good friends here at the hotel for the next month while we complete our adoption, and then to have them just north of us in Hollywood. I think it will be good for the kiddos that they have a community in the area of children who have been adopted from Ghana to play with on occasion.

Well, I think we need to go play some in the courtyard before getting some more dinner (have I written yet about the incredible food here at the hotel?? More on that later). Please pray for deepening bonds of attachment and for the children as they mourn their first family and the life they are losing here in Ghana. Also, please pray for Chris's mom as she watches over Garrett and Elena while we are here -- there are times we miss those two it hurts, but we know that it is better to be forming these first bonds without competition. Much love to all!

We are here and life is GOOD!

We landed yesterday morning and after a brief stop at the hotel we headed to the foster home to see the kids. Oh my goodness, were they all sooooo beautiful. One little one walked straight into Chris's arms and just wanted to stay. Thankfully J does have a family going through the process to bring him home, or Chris and I might have been finding a way to bring home another :)

E and L are doing very well. We have had some periods of sadness -- but both Chris and I think that it is good they are mourning in front of us. Of course, those periods of sadness are often over come by laughter -- especially E's laughter. And most of his sadness is a result of not being able to communicate with us. For example, at lunch today big tears started rolling down his face. After I found a staff member who could help me translate, it was simply that he wanted some water in addition to his pineapple juice and didn't know how to ask. Mommy is slowly starting to catch on to their cues. I have even been treated to L giggles and smiles, and she shared her straw with me at lunch. I have pictures to upload, but the computer is running out of battery and we fried the converter last night so they will have to wait.

Immigration went well today. Our coordinator in Accra, Percy, says that we "should not lose hope" that we will be home by Christmas. I am confident that immigration will go smoothly, the kids Ghanaian passports will be issued shortly, and the visa appointment will be icing on the cake. So you might be wondering just what I might need to pack for a month plus in Ghana. Well, thanks to some wonderful friends that I have yet to meet in person that have traveled this road before our family, I was able to draft a packing list. Hopefully my version of the packing list will help other families who are preparing to adopt from Africa, if not Ghana specifically.

Today has been spent getting the final preparations ready for travel. I have found the last items from the packing list that I still needed and am making the third copy of my paperwork. Tonight I need to prepare our presents for our coordinator and foster family. The big gift for both is a framed print of Oceanside Pier that I have taken in the past month. Hopefully they will enjoy it, and we are also giving the foster family a jar of shells and our coordinator an Obama t-shirt (he's a BIG fan). Part of me thinks that I am still forgetting something important, but I have time still to check and triple-check our lists again. Oh, plus I need to prep the photo albums for Eddie and Lydia so they can start learning the faces that already love them. Gonna be a fun, short night before we hit the highway at 3 AM to catch our flight!

Leaving on a jet plane ...

So the week has finally come when I am getting on a jet plane and flying into the sunrise to pick up our children. Needless to say, there is a mixture of excitement, stress, and concern in the Merrill household. Mostly Daddy and Frick and Frack are concerned (Chris for my safety, G and E because I'll be "far, far away"). However all the stress and concern is well-tempered with the hopes and prayers that by Christmas we will be united as a family of SIX!!! So, as you can see above, I'm gathering all my goodies into one area and getting ready to pack. Of course, the rest of the house is looking like a tornado blew threw, but hey, something has to give. Tomorrow I pick up my mother-in-law from the airport. Dear Sherri is staying at the house to help Chris out with Garrett and Elena while I'm away and, I found out today, she's going to stay through Christmas to celebrate with us and Mick (my FIL) will fly in for or just after Christmas to meet his new grandkids! Hooray!!!

This blog will be the best way to track my progress in Ghana. I'll try to record my travels and upload photos as I can. Most likely I will not be able to get on FB. Please keep sending prayers for a smooth and expedited process. With all the American and Ghanaian holidays between now and the new year, we are going to need them to be home on the 20th of December.

Alright, guess I need to get back to my TO DO list (and yes, TO DO is in capitals because I have so much to do before leaving for a foreign country for a month!). Laters!

Big doings

Alright, so I have decided that it is finally time to post on here what has been happening in our family that has been keeping us very busy.

When Chris and I first decided to adopt again we started looking at photolistings of waiting children. Part of this was to see if our kids were already available for adoption and waiting for us, and part of it was some kind of torture that we adoptive mommies do to ourselves to bide the time until our kids do come home. Well, RainbowKids, one of the best photolisting sites available, sent an email last Saturday with a brother and sister waiting to be adopted in Ghana. These two beautiful children just stole Chris and my hearts! Unfortunately, because of the status of international adoptions today we cannot share any distinguishing information about the brother and sister until we pass court and they legally become our children.

That said, Chris and I started the process to complete our dossier for Ghana. It is so simple compared to other dossiers, like for Guatemala or Ethiopia, and I didn't think that either of those document collections were particularly difficult. Today I am headed to the San Diego USCIS office to drop off our application to bring home these children and hopefully I'll leave with our fingerprint appointment. Once our homestudy is completed in two weeks (just after we move into the new house) than I'll walk that in and hopefully we can go back 1 week later for our approval. If that is the case, Chris and I could be travelling as soon as September to pick up our new children!!!!

At this time, please pray that these kids remain healthy, for the caregivers in their orphanage, and that our house closes on time so that we can finalize our portion of the process. Thanks!

The other morning I was working on my Uppercase Living order and realized the kids had been quiet for a while -- too quiet. So I walked through the house looking for them to see Garrett's door was closed.

Hmm, this little grin is too sweet -- must be guilty of something -- and the evidence is all around him!

Little sister was too busy applying the evidence to her legs to notice Mommy had crept into the room:

"Mommy, I told you I needed bandaids for my booboos!"

"I had owies that needed bandaids. Don't you know that this look is the latest style in medical care????"

Really can't get mad at them for this. Of course, have to hit the store for more bandaids because they are either all over my children or all over the floor.

**Note: Elena later showed me her bare legs (i.e. missing all the previously applied bandaids) and proudly proclaimed "My booboos all better -- bandaids do work!" Yeah, gotta love 3 year olds!

A Rite of Passage for All Dads

Last weekend the Merrill family hung out with the Cipperley clan so that Chris could help Uncle Rice put together Nathan's new playground set. Chris decided all the work must be a rite of passage for all dad's -- he thinks he's paid his due now. It was also our last weekend w/ Uncle Rice before he headed off for a long summer's vacation to the desert and mountains.

Needless to say, the kiddos had fun tearing up Meg's house together, painting themselves, and having a house party at 9pm on Sat night. Sun morning reminded me of college 10 years ago -- flashbacks to mornings after a hard night of partying via the expressions on our kids' faces.

Perfect Day

Today started out a little rough. Chris had a paper due yesterday and was up til all hours trying to get it finished before collapsing a little after 1. We old folks just can't hack staying up that late, and he really couldn't wake up this morning. So, I started the day wondering if our renewed commitment to return to church was going to be interrupted after only 1 week. Thankfully our church has a third service at 10:45, so once Chris was up at 9 we got ready (after waiting for my Morning Glory muffins -- yum-oh! -- to finish baking) and headed out the door.

God must have meant for us to be late, because the service was AMAZING! I have never experienced "High Church" a la incense, chanting, and all at an Episcopal church and it was incredible. The Bishop was in town to confirm many members of the church and gave a powerful sermon about how we are all tempted like Jesus during the season of Lent. Definitely what I had been feeling lately, but unable to put into words. We even brought the kids out of the nursery for communion and had them receive a blessing from the Bishop. Garrett was quite awed by the whole feel of the church, but I think he was more concerned that I ate "blood" and "body" during the process. Going to have to think more on how I explain this rite to the kids!

After church Chris and I loaded the kids back up into the truck and headed to the beach (three blocks away) to enjoy our muffins. The plan was to eat, hang for a short while, and then head home for naps. However, since we had a short, short trip to the beach yesterday, and the 1st of March brought us such nice weather (upper 70s and beautiful skies) we decided to stay and enjoy the day together. Next week I definitely need to pack a change of clothes!

So yesterday was a beautiful day in sunny Southern California. Though Chris had a paper to write for school (and truth be told, so did I) I kicked us out of the house and we headed to the beach. Really, what else are you supposed to do with a morning that is near 80 degrees the last day in February? We had a picnic lunch of granola bars, apples, kettle corn, and juice boxes. The kids were just so excited to be near the sea and sand again after our hiatus. I really think I'll be living at the beach this summer!

Buffalo Alley 10k

Here's a photo of Chris and I getting ready to cross the finish line at the Buffalo Alley 10k in November. Took me a 1:19:47 to finish, but with a 500+ ft climb over the first mile and then hill after hill I was still happy with the finish. Looking to come in under an hour next year. Of course, still need to finish a marathon or two between now and then.

Today Nike+ launched the first global running event. 25 onsite locations in 25 cities around the world. The rest of us were invited to "run where you are." Some companies, such as 24 hour fitness, Starbucks, and RoadRunner sports, hosted events in the local area. Chris, Meg, and I ran around my neighborhood. 6.65 miles according to my iPod Nano with Nike+ sport pack. I ran until the elephant on my chest made me stop. But I shaved 6 minutes off my 4 mile time from last week and we finished the whole shebang in 1'10". Not too shabby.

Now comes the training for the marathon. Another 10k in November (the first mile of which is straight up 500 feet!) and then the big day in January. I'm actually doing it folks! Anyone else out there up to joining me in my mission to get fit again and test my endurance????

Just Did It!

Today I ran my first race. I haven't run seriously since I was in college when I was a cheerleader. Wow, do I feel old. However, I also feel very good. I finished the 4 mile course in 48:12, meaning I averaged a little over 12 min for each mile. I walked 25 minutes of that time also (kept waiting for the darn 2 mile marker to show up and it just wasn't there). Considering I ran a 5k course with the hubby a little over a week ago in slightly over 48 minutes I would say that I am getting better.

Getting better at running is a good thing because I have committed to run the Carlsbad Marathon on January 25. I have paid my registration fees and Chris has signed up to run with me. Yet what is even more important than running a marathon to know that I can do it is to run the race while raising money for very worthwhile causes. Many people sign up with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Team in Training, and while that is a worthwhile cause, personally I have two other charities that are near and dear to my heart. So I have devoted myself to raising $5,000 for Global Orphan Team and the Lance Armstrong Foundation. I am committed to GOT because they are committed to helping the orphans in Guatemala and that is a cause I just can't say no to. I am committed to the Livestrong Foundation because I have known too many people that have fought cancer and the Livestrong Foundation is actively getting the word out to EVERYONE that something needs to be done about this disease (and I am donating money for the Livestrong Foundation in the names of my good friends Cynthia Vissers who is a daily testament to how to live strong with cancer and Anne Marie Gutshall who passed from colon cancer this winter).

What I need from all my friends and family is support over the next 5 months as I train my body to compete in an endurance sport (never done one of those before). But I also am asking for your financial support for these two causes. If everyone I know gives up 1 dinner out from one month (figuring a dinner out costs about $50) I can easily meet my goal and donate substantial amounts to these worthy causes. I will be flooding your mail boxes with letters of personal request, but I thought I should also forewarn everyone. Over the next 5 months I want nothing more than to meet or exceed my goal of $5,000 for Global Orphan Team and the Livestrong Foundation. Thank you for your help. I'll be sharing my journey with you (if not my aching muscles).
